Know What You Want
“They say you have to be hungry to succeed… Me, I’m starving.”
This is a quote from an old co-worker of mine from my days in a video rental store. I thought it was incredibly corny. I almost laughed. Then I watched as he took the training that I gave him and went on to earn the store manager position that I had expected would be mine.
I’m not bitter about that. At least, not anymore. You may have noticed I said he earned it. He worked hard, knew what he wanted and pushed himself to get it. I knew that I wanted the position, but it was something of a nebulous concept to me; it would be nice to be the manager I thought to myself, followed by a complete lack of action on my part. I did my job, sure. I did it pretty well, but I didn’t pursue the promotion the way he did.
You Need a Map
If I were to decide tomorrow that I wanted to go to California (because hey, why not?) I would get a map, grab my GPS and plot out my course with Google maps or something similar. I could point my car west and hope for the best, but that really wouldn’t be the best possible way to get where I want to go.
Unfortunately, many people do that with their lives. We all want to be successful, but how many of us ever really put much thought into it? The ones who reach their goals do. If you really want to get somewhere, you need to know where it is and what it looks like before you leave, otherwise you are going to get lost, frustrated and most likely, you’ll go back home and feel miserable about failing. Think about what you love, what you want to do and whatever it is that will motivate you to get there.
What Does Success Look Like?
What do you think success means? Are you a success when you have a huge home and multiple cars? Do you define success as the ability to take expensive vacations four times per year? Is success when you pay off that student loan that has been haunting you for years? Maybe success is simply not worrying how next month’s bills will be paid, or not having to wonder if you will ever be able to retire.
Much in the same way as you won’t go to the store to “buy something” without knowing what it is you’re looking for, you can’t be successful without knowing what success means to you. Maybe success is simply doing something that you love for a living. Whatever it may be, define it. Know what you want so that you can go get it.
It’s All Right There, Waiting for You.
Once you know what you want and how you want to get there, just get started. Once you set out for your destination, as long as you keep moving, you have to reach it eventually. The only thing that can stop you is if you give up. I am still moving toward my own goals, but I know I am getting closer every day. It is my fervent hope that you will start on your own journey.
I am here to help in any way I can. One of my goals in life is to reach out and help others succeed and avoid the troubles I have had. Please feel free to comment, ask questions, or make suggestions, either here or at firstname.lastname@example.org. I look forward to seeing you Start Working for You!
